The Ugandan government has announced that it will deploy its 47th battalion to Somalia, which will be part of the African Union peacekeeping mission, after it completed intensive training in preparation for the mission.

The farewell ceremony for the battalion was held on April 28, 2026 in Nakaseke, where the Commander of the First Division, commended the soldiers for their efforts and discipline, urging them to maintain professionalism and unity during the mission.

Military officials said that the battalion has been undergoing comprehensive physical, mental and operational training since November, and their readiness level has reached 95%, indicating their readiness for the mission.

The new battalion is expected to join the troops operating in Somalia, which are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia, to contribute to ensuring security and building peace in the country.

The military commanders also stressed the importance of discipline and upholding the reputation of the Ugandan military, saying that soldiers represent their country in the international arena.

Uganda was one of the first countries to send troops to Somalia in 2007, and has played a major role in combating armed groups and supporting government institutions, and still has a significant presence in the ongoing operation in Somalia.
