Taiwan has provided $1 million in support to Somaliland for blood dialysis equipment and services to assist patients suffering from kidney disease.
This support is part of a health partnership between Taiwan and Somaliland aimed at strengthening medical services for those with kidney disease, particularly patients requiring regular dialysis.
Taiwan emphasized that health is a matter that transcends borders, noting that its support for Somaliland is intended to save the lives of patients in need of dialysis services.
Issues regarding kidney disease and dialysis services have recently become a major concern in Somaliland. Patients suffering from kidney disease have repeatedly voiced complaints about the state of services and the need for more facilities and medical equipment to cater to their needs.
Somaliland’s Ministry of Health has faced criticism for failing to improve dialysis services. Following feedback from patients, measures are being taken to address this issue at hospitals in Hargeisa, Burao, and Borama, ensuring patients do not have to travel long distances to receive treatment.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) recently visited the dialysis unit at Hargeisa General Hospital; the visit coincided with rising needs and complaints regarding the services provided to kidney patients.
Dialysis services require significant funding and modern equipment, as patients with kidney disease need ongoing treatment. Consequently, Taiwan’s one-million-dollar contribution is expected to help improve the availability of equipment, services, and medical care for kidney patients.
