Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has called on the Federal Government of Somalia to stop the fighting in Gedo region, saying the conflict is hindering efforts to confront terrorist groups.

President Deni said it is unfortunate that the federal government has deployed troops to Gedo region, which has led to clashes between government forces. He noted that this has caused casualties and widespread displacement.

“I call on the central government to exercise common sense and respect the interests of the Somali people. The current actions indicate a grave danger that could lead to national collapse, if not avoided,” said President Deni.

He accused the federal government of fomenting civil strife based on personal political interests, instead of protecting the unity and solidarity of the Somali people.

“It is sad that the government that is mandated to protect the unity of the nation is busy organizing chaos and wars that do not serve the common good, with short-term political goals,” said Deni.

The Puntland President also said that the steps being taken by the federal government are damaging the trust and international support it is giving to the reconstruction of Somalia.

He underlined that while Al-Shabaab has recaptured key areas, the federal government is busy carrying out attacks against peaceful areas.
