Ethiopia has announced that it will continue its efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab.
Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, underlined the important role of Ethiopia in reducing the threat of al-Shabaab in the region.
“Al-Shabaab is still a concern for our national security, and efforts to prevent it will continue in any case to prevent it from becoming a threat to the security of the region,” said Nebiat Getachew.
Nebiat also noted that since Ethiopia and Somalia are inseparable neighbors, Ethiopia will continue to implement its strategic vision to strengthen regional integration in the long term.
The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia was followed by a statement issued by the Minister of Defense of Somalia, Abdulkadir Mohamed Noor, in which he declared that Ethiopia will not participate in the AUSSOM mission of the African Union in Somalia.
The minister argued that the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland is detrimental to the independence and unity of Somalia.
Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia deteriorated after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, 2024.
The agreement aims to facilitate access to the sea for Ethiopia to recognize the independence of Somaliland.
