Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi is working hard to ensure Somalia wins the seat of the United Nations Security Council.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, traveled to New York in the United States to lobby for Somalia to become a member of the United Nations Security Council.

The move comes ahead of the next election of Security Council members, scheduled for June 6 during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The visit of Minister Fiqi to New York is part of a wide diplomatic effort to get support for Somalia’s demand, with the aim of enhancing the country’s role in international peace and security.

The United Nations General Assembly will elect five new members to the Security Council in 2024.

The seats available for election are distributed as follows.

One African seat, currently held by Mozambique;

One Asia-Pacific seat, currently held by Japan;

One seat in Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC), currently held by Ecuador.

and Two seats for Western Europe and Others (WEOG), currently held by Malta and Switzerland.
