The United Nations has warned of widespread flooding in Somalia, due to the spring rains, which could displace hundreds of thousands of people.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), heavy rains in April-June are expected to affect approximately 770,000 people in 22 districts.

OCHA said humanitarian workers have prepared plans to mitigate the expected impact. However, the agency said urgent resources are still needed to ensure a timely response.

OCHA has warned that heavy rains will increase the risk of cholera outbreaks in regions where the disease has not been reported for years.

The United Nations said it was working with Somali health officials on preparedness efforts under the guidance of a six-month $5.9 million action plan to deal with cholera situations that could arise from the floods.
