The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced that in 2025, Turkey will start oil exploration off the coast of Somalia.

This initiative follows a bilateral agreement to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and Turkey. Somalia’s cabinet recently approved the agreement

“Turkey and Somalia are now ready to develop Somalia’s oil reserves. The agreement includes exploration, exploitation, development and production of oil off the coast of Somalia,” said Bayraktar.

In addition to Turkey’s plans for Somalia, Turkey continues to expand its domestic energy capacity. This year he plans to drill 140 wells in places including Hakkari and Van.

Turkey has been an important friend of Somalia since 2011, when the Prime Minister at the time, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, visited during a drought in which many people died.

Since then, Turkey has provided humanitarian aid and budget support to Somalia.
