A warship named INS Kolkata, which carried 35 pirates captured in an operation off the coast of Somalia, arrived in Mumbai this morning, according to the Indian Navy.
The pirates have been handed over to the Mumbai police.
“INS Kolkata, along with the 35 arrested pirates, reached Mumbai on March 23 and handed over the pirates to the local police for further legal action as per Indian laws, particularly Anti-Piracy Act 2022,” the Indian Navy said.
In an operation that lasted for more than 40 hours and started in the early hours of March 15, the Indian Navy captured the MV Ruen which was held by pirates.
The ship was said to be used to carry out pirate attacks against commercial ships.
Somali pirates now have a ship named MV Abdullahi from Bangladesh, which is carrying coal.
The ship’s owners refused to allow the ship to be taken in a military operation, fearing for the crew on board and the safety of the ship’s property.
