Both houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia are debating the amendment of four chapters of the first articles of the Transitional Constitution.
The debate, which will last from February 14 to 19, is the first to be held to finalize the constitution since 1960.
The two councils were given a copy of the proposal to amend the Constitution, while the council heard a report from the Committee for Review and Monitoring of the Constitution.
Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 were prepared by the Constitutional Review and Monitoring Committee and the discussion of Chapter 1 will continue from February 14 to February 19.
Chapter 2 will be debated from 21 February to 04 March while Chapter 3 debate is scheduled for 06 March to 11 of the month.
The last Chapter 4 is scheduled for discussion from 13 March to 23 March and is the completion of Phase 2 of Chapters 1 to 4 of the Constitution of the Republic.
The debate on the amendment of the constitution comes at a time of controversy, and the parliament is already divided on the amendment of the constitution. The Puntland administration and the former leaders of the country have opposed the amendment of the constitution, warning against the implementation of the political agreement that the Somali government submitted to the parliament.
President Hassan Sheikh has already said that the amendment of the constitution is not open to discussion, saying that the implementation of any amendment to the constitution will be implemented by the next government.
