Somalia has become one of 33 African nations eligible to export goods to European Union markets exempt from customs duties and quota restrictions, according to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the European Union Delegation to Somalia.

The Delegation noted that this trade opportunity is made possible through the “Everything But Arms” (EBA) arrangement, which allows beneficiary countries to export goods to the EU market duty-free—with the exception of arms and ammunition.

The statement further highlighted that this arrangement has no expiration date, which could encourage Somali entrepreneurs to expand their production, investments, and business operations.

This opportunity could prove significant for Somalia—a nation with an economy reliant on livestock, agriculture, fisheries, and trade—by opening up new markets for locally produced goods.

However, the ability to capitalize on this opportunity will depend on the capacity of Somali businesses to ensure their products meet the European Union’s standards for quality, safety, and health. This system is part of the European Union’s efforts to support trade in the world’s poorest countries by providing an opportunity for their goods to enter the European market.
