The governments of Turkey and Somalia signed a new agreement in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, amending the implementation of the financial assistance agreement signed between the two countries on July 17, 2019.

The agreement, which is called the Amendment to the Protocol on the Implementation of the Financial Assistance Agreement, was signed by Turkey’s Minister of National Defense Yasar Guled, while Somalia’s Minister of Defense Ahmed Moalin Fiqi signed it.

The Somali Ministry of Defense said that the agreement aims to strengthen defense cooperation between the two sides, and to improve the quality of the Somali armed forces.

Somali Minister of Defense Ahmed Moalin Fiqi indicated that the agreement reflects the deep relationship between the two countries and Somalia’s commitment to using Turkey’s support for its national interests.

However, this new agreement is coming, as the Turkish government is one of the countries playing a key role in rebuilding the Somali government’s defense sector, and it is worth noting that Turkey has trained more than 15,000 Somali soldiers since 2017.
