The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Isse Awad, said that the decision that Somalia requested not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM) was rushed.

Ahmed Isse Awad, who spoke to VOA Somali, believes that the work of the UNSOM office for the government of Somalia is still indispensable, pointing out that the Somali government institutions need help.

Ambassador Ahmed Isse said the Security Council will probably not support the decision of the Somali government.

He said some members of the Security Council, such as the United States, Britain, and France, believe that Somalia has not yet reached full self-sufficiency, and it is inevitable that it should be controlled.

However, the Government of Somalia wants to move from the United Nations Office of Assistance to Somalia (UNSOM) to a regular United Nations Office.

The government has said that this change is part of a wider strategy that Somalia wants to harmonize with the structure of international relations and that of other independent countries.
