Somalia rejected a statement made by Kenya’s foreign affairs secretary, Korir Sing’oei, which was a proposal for a maritime agreement reached by IGAD countries, to resolve the crisis between Ethiopia.
Ali Omar Balcad, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the said plan is baseless and baseless, stressing that Somalia insists on the unity of its land.
“The news about the maritime agreement involving Somalia and Ethiopia is completely false. Somalia insists on the unity of its land. We call for a focus on peace and stability in the region.” Minister Balcad said.
This rejection came after Kenya’s foreign secretary, Korir Sing’oei, told Reuters that Kenya shared the agreement with Somalia, to calm the crisis.
The purpose of the proposed agreement was for Ethiopia to have access to marine resources while respecting Somalia’s independence.
Sing’oei claimed that the agreement would allow landlocked states to have access to commercial ports by sharing marine resources with IGAD member states that have coastlines.
