The Kenyan government has said that it will not soon reopen its border with Somalia.
Kenya said it is concerned about the security implications of the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia, which is currently in short supply.
Interior Secretary Raymond Omollo said in an interview with Nation Africa that they have assessed the need to ensure the security of the country at all points of entry and exit.
Dr Omollo’s statement comes nine months after Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki and Somalia’s Security Minister Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali announced the reopening of the border following high-level talks in Nairobi.
The border between the two countries has been closed for 12 years.
The stakeholders’ summit will review operations at Kenya’s borders over the past decade since the establishment of the Border Control Coordination Task Force, currently chaired by Dr Omollo.
