United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the international community to continue its support for Somalia as the country faces challenges in the political, security, humanitarian, and development spheres, following the conclusion of the UN political mission, UNSOM.
Guterres stated that international support is vital for safeguarding the progress Somalia has made, strengthening government institutions, and advancing inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he affirmed that the United Nations will not cease its support for Somalia; rather, it will continue to provide assistance through its various agencies, funds, and programs operating in the country, in collaboration with the Somali government and international partners.
He further highlighted that the protection of human rights and the consolidation of peace and stability are among the areas requiring sustained support.
Guterres commended the progress achieved by Somalia and the resilience of the Somali people, while also expressing his gratitude to the staff who served with UNSOM and previous United Nations missions in the country. The conclusion of UNTMIS has brought an end to one phase of the United Nations’ political presence in Somalia; however, the organization has stated that it will continue its support activities in the areas of peace, stability, and development in the country.
