The Somali government has strongly condemned the latest violation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which it said was led by an Israeli official accompanied by extremist groups.
The government described the act as an insult to the sanctity of Islam’s third holiest site and a grave offense to the feelings of millions of Muslims around the world.
In a press release issued by the government on Wednesday, it said the incident could further escalate regional tensions, calling for the preservation of the historical and legal status of the religious holy sites in Jerusalem.
Somalia, a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people and its position in defending their rights, saying it was committed to protecting the holy sites and respecting international law.
The Federal Government called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take measures to stop the acts it described as provocative and abusive, and to ensure accountability for all those involved.
Somalia also called on all parties to exercise restraint and return to dialogue that can lead to a lasting peace based on justice, in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions.
The press release noted that Somalia remains committed to the two-state solution, describing it as the only path to achieving lasting peace, security and stability in the Middle East.
