US President Donald Trump has said the US-Iran ceasefire is “over”, calling talks with Tehran a “waste of time”.

The comments came after the US confirmed it had carried out what it described as “strong” strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, saying the move was in response to attacks on three ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, including two oil tankers from Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Iran, for its part, said it had retaliated by targeting 85 US military bases, which it said were in response to the strikes in Hormozgan province and the port city of Mahshahr. At the same time, airstrike warning sirens were heard in Bahrain and Kuwait.

The Trump administration also revoked a previous authorization that allowed Iran to export oil under an interim peace agreement signed between Washington and Tehran on June 17.

Meanwhile, the coffin of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was recently assassinated, has arrived in the Iraqi city of Najaf, where his funeral ceremonies have begun.
