The opposition Somaliland party KAAH said that the Somaliland embassy opened in Jerusalem is against the Somaliland Constitution, international law and the United Nations Charter, although the party supports the relationship and recognition granted to Somaliland by Israel.

The Foreign Secretary of the KAAH party, Barkhad Mahmoud Kariye, said that his party welcomes any recognition Somaliland receives, and also supported the recognition granted to Somaliland by Israel. He noted that Israel is one of the countries that Somaliland wants to have relations and cooperation with.

“We support the relationship between Somaliland and Israel, and we welcome the recognition granted to Somaliland by Israel. However, the embassy opened in Jerusalem is against the Somaliland Constitution, international law and the United Nations Charter, as the embassy could have been opened elsewhere,” said Barkhad.

The KAAH party also accused the government of shielding Somaliland’s fateful issues from opposition parties and legislative bodies, saying that major agreements with foreign countries should be negotiated with political stakeholders.

The secretary said that the party has repeatedly called on the Somaliland President to involve all political parties in international agreements and important decisions, but the government has taken a path of deciding on these issues alone.

This statement comes after Somaliland and Israel recently announced that they have officially recognized each other, and Somaliland opened an embassy in Jerusalem.

The decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem has sparked political and legal debate, as the city is a disputed site between Israel and Palestine, while most of the international community believes that the final status of the city will be determined through peace negotiations between the two sides.
