The Federal Government of Somalia has said that the country has officially entered a new phase of transitioning to a democratic system based on one person, one vote, after three days of failed talks with some of the opposition.

A press release from the Ministry of Information stated that the government is fulfilling its constitutional obligation to implement free and fair elections that give citizens the right to choose and be elected.

The statement also stated that the government has recently been consulting with political stakeholders and various sectors of society to listen to their views on the electoral process.

However, the government said that some members of the opposition have brought to the table views that it described as contrary to the fundamental right of the Somali citizen to choose and be elected.

The Federal Government has finally confirmed that the country will hold one-person, one-vote elections in accordance with the constitution, the laws of the country and the government’s political program, while reiterating that the door to dialogue and consultation remains open to all political parties.

It is being closely watched and observed how the opposition will respond to the failed talks with the government, which were led by the international community.
