The Turkish government has strongly denied allegations spread on social media that Ankara is interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs and pressuring the opposition to support a particular political party.

A statement from the Turkish presidential press and information department said the reports were “baseless” and aimed at misleading public opinion.

“Allegations that Turkey is interfering in the political process in Somalia and using military force to pressure the opposition and support a particular party are completely false,” the statement said.

The Turkish government said its relations with Somalia have long been based on legitimate cooperation in accordance with international law, with the aim of strengthening security, stability and the institutions of the Somali state.

The statement also noted that Turkish troops in Somalia are focusing on rebuilding and training the Somali National Army, modernizing security institutions and strengthening the ability to combat armed groups.

“Turkish forces have no involvement in Somalia’s elections or internal political disputes,” the statement said, with Ankara saying it supported the continuation of the democratic process and respect for the will of the Somali people.

Turkey also called on the public and the media not to believe the reports, which it described as propaganda and misleading information that damage the deep ties between the two countries.
