The United Nations Interim Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) said it was closely monitoring the situation in the South West State, expressing concern about the political tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and the regional states.

A press release issued by UNTMIS said that disputes between the Federal Government and the regional states should be resolved through dialogue and consensus, rather than through violence or actions that could lead to conflict.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in the South West. Political disputes between the Federal Government of Somalia and the regional states should be resolved through dialogue,” the statement said.

The UN also warned that the escalating tensions could have a negative impact on the stability, security, unity and humanitarian situation in the country, further worsening the living conditions of the Somali people.

“We are concerned about the impact that these escalating tensions could have on the stability, security, unity and humanitarian situation in Somalia,” UNTMIS added, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and responsibility.

Finally, the United Nations urged all parties concerned to refrain from any action that could lead to armed conflict, warning that if the situation worsens, it could jeopardize the achievements made in Somalia’s development and peace.
