Former Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke has fully supported the amendments to Chapter 4 of the Interim Constitution, amid political disagreements over constitutional issues between the government and the opposition.
Omar Abdirashid and Ambassador Dahir Mohamud Guelleh held a press conference in Mogadishu last night, discussing the political situation in the country and the controversy over the constitutional amendments.
The former Prime Minister said he fully supports the amendments to Chapter 4, thanking the relevant committees and the Parliament for their efforts.
“We would have liked the constitutional issue to have been brought before Parliament earlier, but thank God it was possible today. We thank the government for implementing what was agreed upon earlier,” said Omar Abdirashid.
He also indicated that the previous agreement with Villa Somalia is part of this process, and he welcomes the government’s commitment to its implementation.
“We fully support the first reading of Chapter 4 submitted to Parliament, and we commend the government and the committees involved for approving the agreement we signed on August 25,” he added.
Meanwhile, Omar Abdirashid said that what remains are the issues of elections and the expected discussions between the government and the Somali Future Council, expressing his hope that a unified agreement will be reached.
“The remaining issues are the elections, and we await the discussions between the Future Council and the government, which we hope will yield fruitful results,” he said.
