The Minister of Agricultural Development of Kenya, MKithika Linturi, has announced that Kenya will sign an agreement with Somalia on the Mirwoga khat, to ensure what he called sustainable economic benefits and to find a legal framework for the khat business.

Mr. Linturi noted that cash crops are the backbone of the Meru economy, which he said contributes greatly to the lives of people living in the Meru region of Kenya.

Linturi, who is from Meruc province, said that the two countries are ready to sign this agreement. In particular, he said that the agreement will be signed on May 8, 2024.

This news comes at a time when Kenya is making efforts to re-invigorate the Mirawwa business that is exported to Somalia.

Kenyan businessmen are complaining that high taxes are being levied on Kada exported to Somalia, which they say has hampered their business.
