The United Nations special representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing, called on the government of Somalia to return Puntland to the forum of the National Consultative Assembly.
Catriona Laing, said that there is a critical stage that needs to reach an agreement on the issues of destiny and the elections are the first.
“We are in a critical period where we need to agree together, with the government leading the process of elections, the type of elections Somalia will take, the timing, and the format of the elections. Of course, it is very important to try to bring Puntland back to this process, because it will be very difficult to complete the electoral process,” said Ms. Laing.
She stressed the importance of continuing the process of revising the Constitution of Somalia.
“Without a constitution, it will be very difficult for the country to move forward. Somalia really needs that constitution to be completed; as you know, the country is still working with a draft constitution,” said the UN envoy.
The UN Special Envoy for Somalia made this statement at a press conference held in Mogadishu.
Her statement came a few days after President Hassan Sheikh said that the country needs to move forward and implement the agreement to amend the country’s electoral process.
