The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) has handed over three helicopters to the Burundian forces in Somalia to help in operations against Al-Shabaab.
In an official statement posted by UNSOS on its Twitter account, it showed the importance of these planes in strengthening ATMIS operations in Somalia.
The Mi-8 and Bell 412 helicopters, approved by the United Nations, are of special importance in the fight against al-Shabaab.
“They will enable the transport of troops, the rapid recovery of critical supplies, and the evacuation of medical supplies to the front lines,” the UNSOS statement said.
UNSOS said it is committed to providing critical logistical support and facilitation to ATMIS, in close and collaborative cooperation with the Somali Security Forces (SSF).
This support aims to help ATMIS to carry out its duties effectively in Somalia, and it came after the African Union (AU) agreed to suspend the withdrawal of ATMIS peacekeeping forces for 90 days.
Somalia has already received Bell 412 helicopters, which are supposed to significantly increase the capacity of the Somali National Army (SNA).
In July, SNA forces recovered two of these twin helicopters.
