The European Union (EU) has approved an amount of 20.5 million euros in budget support for the Federal Government of Somalia (DFS).

This support coincides with the Federal Government and the European Union launching a Joint Action Plan for cooperation between the European Union and Somalia, which outlines the priorities for the next two years.

By providing this money, the European Union is supporting the federal government to implement its national development and stabilization plan and continue on the path to the process of the highly indebted poor countries (HIPC).

The European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Mrs. Tiina Intelmann, said: Somalia will soon achieve a historic victory, which will bring new opportunities but also challenges. Increasing domestic resource mobilization and improving financial management are absolutely critical to the advancement of the economic reform agenda and continued state building in Somalia.

The European Union said it hopes to continue its support and close cooperation with Somalia to ensure that more good services are delivered to Somali citizens.

Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Elmi Mahamoud Nur, Minister of Finance XFS, welcomed the new support from the European Union, which he described as a very valuable source of assistance to ensure that the government strengthens the ongoing reforms and the delivery of basic social services.
