The Somaliland Police Force, having arrested journalist Hassan Saleebaan Harun (Hassan Galaydh)—the owner of Galaydh TV—in the city of Gabiley yesterday, stated that he is being held on allegations of disseminating false information.
In a released statement, the Somaliland Police Command indicated that Hassan Galaydh was questioned regarding reports he had circulated in the media but failed to provide any evidence to substantiate the validity of those reports.
“The Somaliland Police Force has apprehended the suspect, Hassan Saleebaan Harun (Galaydh), who is accused of spreading false information.”
The police added that preparations are underway to promptly bring the suspect before judicial authorities so that legal action can be taken in accordance with the law.
Hassan Galaydh was arrested in Gabiley on Wednesday while there on a work trip. His arrest followed remarks he made the previous day in Hargeisa, where he—along with other journalists—called on the Somaliland government to release journalist Abdiqani Baylood, who had recently been detained.
Hassan Galaydh had appealed to the President of Somaliland to release Baylood, reminding President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) of the stance he had taken regarding the detention of journalists during his time in the opposition. He stated that while the government has not yet formally charged journalist Baylood, charges are currently being prepared against him.
The journalist’s arrest has also sparked a political reaction, with press freedom and free speech advocates calling for the release of Hassan Galaydh and the other detained journalists.
The Somaliland government had previously—during its time in opposition—campaigned for freedom of speech and the press, criticizing the administration of President Muse Bihi Abdi for its treatment of journalists and media outlets.
