Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired a cabinet meeting today, which focused on the country’s security situation, the free and fair election process and the development of democratic processes.

The meeting was briefed on the latest operations by the Somali Armed Forces, with the government reporting that the forces had achieved successes in the fight against Al-Shabaab, and that the group had been defeated.

The cabinet also approved the Business Registration and Licensing Bill, which the government said was part of efforts to regulate the business environment and enhance investment transparency.

The cabinet also approved a memorandum of understanding between the Turkish Presidency’s General Directorate of Religious Affairs and the Somali Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, which aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in religious affairs, education and training related to religious services.

The conference comes as Somalia is conducting security operations against Al-Shabaab, and the federal government is intensifying efforts to reform state institutions and implement an electoral process that it says is based on democracy and political participation.
