The Somali Ministry of Defense said it had arrested individuals dressed in Somali National Army uniforms after a video of what the ministry described as an unacceptable act involving the US flag went viral on social media.
A press release from the ministry said the act did not reflect the values, ethics and professionalism of the Somali National Army, and did not represent the position of the Ministry of Defense or the Federal Government of Somalia.
The ministry said the individuals involved in the incident had been arrested, and an investigation is underway to determine how the incident occurred and what legal and disciplinary measures will be taken against them.
The statement also noted that Somalia attaches great importance to security cooperation with the United States, saying that cooperation between the two countries has played a key role in combating Al-Shabaab and ISIS, and strengthening the country’s security institutions.
The Department of Defense has finally reiterated its respect for the people and the American flag, affirming its commitment to continuing the strategic partnership between the two countries.
A video circulating on social media showed young men in military uniforms standing in front of the American flag.
