Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has called for an urgent meeting between incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former presidents to find a political solution to the country’s deepening conflict.

Farmaajo said he was officially inviting Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to a meeting at his residence, which he said would discuss issues such as elections, security and the political future of Somalia.

The former president noted that resolving political disputes should be done by Somalis themselves, noting that there was no need for external intervention if Somali leaders were ready for dialogue and consensus.

Farmaajo said Somalia was at a critical political juncture, arguing that disputes over the electoral process and governance had affected the country’s overall security and stability.

He reiterated that a lasting solution could only be reached at the negotiating table, calling for an end to tensions and conflicts and for an inclusive political dialogue.

Farmaajo also said he was ready to play a role in efforts to resolve the conflict, urging all political parties to prioritize the national interest and unity of the country.

He argued that Somaliland had become more distant, while Puntland said it was in a precarious position awaiting the political direction of the central government. He also pointed out that Jubbaland still faces political disputes that require a negotiated solution.

He said that if the existing disputes are not resolved, the political divide could increase, which he described as a threat to the unity and statehood of Somalia.
