Several countries and international organizations have expressed their concern over the political situation in Somalia, calling on political parties to return to dialogue and consensus on the country’s electoral process.
A joint press release issued today said the signatories to the statement were concerned about the current situation in Somalia, amid growing political disputes over electoral matters and governance.
The international community called on all parties to resume talks as soon as possible and reach an agreement on an electoral plan to protect the interests of the Somali people.
The statement also said the international community stands ready to support Somali-led dialogue if needed.
“At this critical time, we urge all Somali leaders to prioritize national interests and avoid any actions that could escalate tensions,” the statement said.
Countries and organizations that signed the statement include the United Kingdom (UK), the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UNTMIS), Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Portugal and Spain.
The statement comes at a time when Somalia has been facing intense political debate over the electoral process, with growing calls for a political consensus to overcome the current differences.
