The Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission (INEBC) announced on Sunday that it has postponed the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the South West State, which was scheduled to take place on May 18, 2026.
A press release from the commission said that the postponement of the election was related to the pending decision of the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which had filed a petition to validate the election results.
The commission said the petition was in accordance with the provisions of the electoral law that give the Supreme Court the power to review and validate the results of elections conducted by the commission.
“Although the election schedule has already been announced, the commission is awaiting the decision of the Supreme Court to ensure the integrity and legality of the election process,” the statement said.
The commission also noted that upon receiving the Supreme Court’s response, it will continue to carry out its election duties, including announcing the schedule for the hearing of elected members and the formation of the leadership of the House of Representatives.
The suspension of the election comes at a time when Somalia is facing political tensions and disputes over the electoral process and the legitimacy of constitutional institutions.
