The European Union said it was awaiting a joint statement from the Federal Government of Somalia and the opposition, which would clarify the nature of the elections in the country and the timetable set, as political talks in Mogadishu entered their third day.
The European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, said in a statement published on X.com that Somalia was entering a “new political phase”, with ongoing talks focusing on reaching an agreement on inclusive elections and a peaceful transition.
“The aim of the talks is to agree on a credible and inclusive electoral process, in which the voices of women and youth are heard,” the EU Ambassador said.
She also said she hoped for a joint statement setting out the timetable for the political transition and the direction of the country’s elections.
The EU statement comes as meetings are underway in Mogadishu between the Federal Government and opposition leaders to discuss the political dispute surrounding the elections and the transition process.
International diplomats are closely following the talks, with the international community urging Somali parties to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that avoids political tension and further setbacks.
The EU Ambassador’s message also expressed the concern of Somalia’s international partners on the importance of finding an electoral system that is in line with the current security, economic and political circumstances, and that leads to political stability.
The Somali people are still awaiting the outcome of the Mogadishu talks, which are seen as decisive for the country’s political direction and the nature of the elections that are expected to take place.
