The Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission has issued a new circular that directly affects the voting process in the ongoing elections in the South West State of Somalia.

The decision came after consultations with political parties and reforms to voter registration in some districts of the region, which affected the previous schedule of electoral activities, according to a statement issued by the commission.

The commission announced that officially registered voters can only cast their votes when two conditions are met, namely, that the person must be in possession of an official voter card or voter registration paper.

The commission also directed polling station staff to strictly verify the identity of the voter, that his name is on the final list, prevent double voting, use of indelible ink, record any fraudulent or suspicious incidents, and immediately report reports to the commission and security agencies.

The commission clearly warned against any attempt to disrupt the electoral process, such as double voting, use of forged documents, or voting in someone else’s name, and the commission vowed in its statement that anyone involved in such acts will face legal action in accordance with the electoral laws and the Somali penal code.

The commission finally called on all political parties to educate their supporters on the protection of the law and participation in a safe and fair election.
