A meeting of the traditional elders and the people of Lughaya area in western Somaliland has been opposed to the naval base being given to Ethiopia.

Decisions that came out of this meeting and went to the traditional elders said that the people of the area will never allow Ethiopian troops to enter the area.

“Many of Lughaya were given from the military base without our consent, the owners of Lughaya when we are telling the truth are those, we are prohibited from having a military base in a neighboring country as well” said a spokesman for the elders.

They said that the military base is not useful for the whole of Somaliland, that’s why we don’t allow the base to be established even in other regions of Somaliland.

Sections of the Somaliland community have opposed the naval base to be given to the Ethiopian government, while others have supported it. Lughaya has become the most talked about place after an Ethiopian official said that it is the place where the base will be built.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland D.R. Isse Kayd Mohamud, who recently spoke to the Ethiopian media, said that there is nothing in the news that the Lughaya station will be built and that no official decision has been made on the location.
