Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and a delegation led by him have departed for the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
Sources close to the presidency confirmed the delegation’s travel, noting that the UN General Assembly session opens tomorrow.
President Hassan Sheikh is expected to deliver an address at the gathering, focusing on the general situation in Somalia—particularly the need for the international community to increase support regarding security and the fight against Al-Shabaab.
The President is also expected to discuss the country’s political and security landscape, as well as the importance of bolstering support for Somalia’s armed forces.
The Federal Government of Somalia intends to use this international forum to draw global attention to the humanitarian situation in the country while also calling for increased international aid and investment. While in New York, President Hassan Sheikh is also expected to participate in official and side meetings with senior United Nations officials, U.S. government representatives, and leaders of other UN member states.
The President’s visit coincides with Somalia’s membership in the UN Security Council, an opportunity that allows the government to directly participate in deliberations and decisions regarding international peace and security.
