The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has said that the country is gradually moving away from a system based on personal politics and power-sharing by clans, and towards a new system based on political parties and one-person-one-vote elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of the leader of the South West State, Adan Mohamed Nur (Aadan Madoobe), the President said that Somalia is “tired of personal politics,” and that it is necessary to move towards a system of government based on strong institutions and parties.
He noted that despite security challenges and circumstances that have prevented elections from being held in all regions of the country, the progress made cannot be ignored, and the setbacks do not mean that the political process has stalled.
“The country has embarked on a major political transformation, and is gradually moving away from indirect elections and a system based on power-sharing by clans,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
The President also indicated that the JSP Party is entitled to the largest share in the cabinet to be formed, however, there will also be consideration for other parties that participated in the elections.
“Adan Madoobe and I have reached an understanding, but due to the circumstances, other parties that participated in the elections will also be given their share,” he added.
