The Council on American Muslims (CAIR-MN) has condemned racist and xenophobic remarks made by U.S. Representative Tom Emmer, who targeted the Somali-American community.

Emmer, speaking at an event hosted by the Faith & Freedom Coalition in Washington, D.C., said Somali immigrants are not integrated into society, and those who are not should go back to where they came from. He also said he would no longer be careful about being labeled a “racist” or “Islamophobe.”

CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said Emmer’s comments were inappropriate for a member of Congressional leadership, calling the call for Somali-Americans to “go back to where they came from” a racist rhetoric that has long been targeted at immigrant and minority communities.

The organization called on Congressional leaders from both parties to publicly condemn Emmer’s remarks and to ensure that racism and anti-immigrant sentiment have no place in American politics.

CAIR-MN also noted that it has repeatedly condemned rhetoric and actions targeting Somali Americans.
