British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced today that he is resigning as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, after months of political pressure and infighting within his party.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain in office until a new leader is elected, to ensure a smooth transition of power.

His resignation comes as Labour suffered a crushing defeat in local elections in May, and as criticism and opposition from his own party’s own MPs grew over his economic policies and welfare reforms.

Andy Burnham’s victory in a by-election on 18 June has also fuelled speculation that a new Labour leadership race is imminent.

A poll by Ipsos showed that 52 percent of the British public believe that Starmer should step down, while only 35 percent supported him staying.

Keir Starmer’s resignation brings Britain into a new political era, with the country having its seventh leader in a decade, reflecting the country’s growing political instability and change.
