Somali Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Ali Yusuf Ali Xoosh said that the election of district governors in the Banadir region will begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday, with local council members electing their district leaders.

The minister made the remarks at a training event for new local council members, noting that this step is part of completing the local government system based on a democratic and accountable process.

“After this training, especially after the holiday, district leadership elections will be held, where council members will elect the district governor and his deputies,” said Minister Ali Xoosh.

He said that this process is important for strengthening local government and implementing a system of government that represents the people.

The minister also noted that the training provided to local council members will not be limited to this workshop alone, but will include technical and ongoing training related to district administration, project planning, social services and legislative procedures for local councils.

The federal government of Somalia has been making efforts in recent times to implement a local government system and local elections in the Banadir Region, which are seen as a step towards strengthening governance and public participation in governance matters.
