The Russian government is planning to deliver food aid to Somalia to support vulnerable communities affected by drought, conflict and displacement, according to the Somali Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA).
The announcement came after a meeting in Mogadishu between Somali Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Xoosh, SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moalin Abdulle, and Russian Ambassador to Djibouti Mikhail Golovanov, who is on a working visit to Somalia.
According to SoDMA, the discussions focused on coordinating Russia’s planned food aid delivery to Somalia, and strengthening cooperation in the areas of humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moalin Abdulle commended Russia’s support for Somalia, particularly in emergency relief and humanitarian assistance.
The United Nations estimates that millions of Somalis still need humanitarian assistance, as a series of droughts, floods, conflicts and the effects of climate change have severely undermined people’s livelihoods and agricultural and livestock production.
Russia previously donated 25,000 tons of food to Somalia in 2023 after severe flooding linked to El Niño.
