A political crisis has erupted following an indirect election held today in Baidoa, where the Somali Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac), won the HOP204 seat in the House of the People.
The election, which took place late today, was conducted by indirect means, with the voting delegates voting for the Minister, who was later officially declared the winner of the seat. Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur received 96 votes after conceding the seat to his rival.
Minister Jamac gave a brief speech thanking the delegates for their vote, promising to represent the interests of the people effectively.
However, a fierce controversy has surrounded the election results, after the former MP for this seat, Isaaq Ali Subag, publicly rejected the result, stating that he still holds the HOP204 seat and has not resigned.
MP Subag described the election process as “illegal,” calling for greater accountability and transparency.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports circulating on social media suggest that there are ongoing discussions and understandings within the House of the People, with speculation about political plans for the future leadership.
Minister Jama, when asked about the possibility of running for Speaker of the House of the People or President of the South West State, declined to answer directly, but political sources indicate that he is interested in the Speaker of Parliament seat.
There are also reports that the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aden Madoobe, is planning to run for President of the South West State, which has further intensified the political rivalry in the South West State.
These developments come as the term of the House of the People ends on April 14 this year, raising concerns about the electoral process and political stability in the country.
