US President Donald Trump has warned that his country will launch a massive attack on Iran’s vital infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened by a deadline set today.

Trump said US forces have the ability to destroy Iranian power plants and bridges “within hours”, pressuring Tehran to allow the reopening of the vital waterway for international trade.

Meanwhile, the US president said Iran’s response to the US-proposed ceasefire proposal was “significant” but not yet satisfactory, indicating that there are still obstacles to reaching an agreement.

Iran’s military reacted strongly to Trump’s threats, describing them as “imaginary” and saying they could not cover up what they called the US’s humiliation and failure in the region.

Tensions in the region have escalated after joint US-Israeli airstrikes in Iran, which reportedly killed at least 34 people on Monday. At the same time, Iran has launched a series of missile and drone strikes targeting targets in the Gulf.

An Israeli airstrike in central Gaza killed at least 10 Palestinians who were at a school housing displaced people, raising concerns about the humanitarian situation there.

The escalating tensions between the US, Iran and their allies threaten the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which much of the world’s oil passes, and could have a major impact on the global economy if the situation escalates.
