President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received ambassadors and representatives of international organizations operating in the country at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, sharing with them an update on the general situation in Somalia.
The meeting focused on, according to the presidency, the achievements of the Somali government and people, including improving security, fighting armed groups, drought relief efforts, and plans to implement direct elections.
The president also stressed the importance of strengthening the unity and solidarity of the nation.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked the ambassadors for their support for Somalia, especially in the areas of state reconstruction, security, and economic development, noting that his government will continue cooperation based on mutual interest and respect.
Meanwhile, sources said that the president assured international representatives of his commitment to completing the one-person, one-vote election, noting that this system is one that can ensure peaceful political change.
He said his government had begun political talks, but accused some opposition figures of obstructing progress on the issue.
The president told international representatives that he planned to complete an electoral process in the country’s regional states by May.
Some international representatives who spoke at the meeting stressed the need for genuine dialogue and an inclusive political agreement to ensure a mutually acceptable electoral process.
