The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) said it is closely monitoring the situation in South West Somalia, amid rising political and security tensions between the federal government and the regional states.

In a press release, IGAD expressed strong concern about the escalation of tensions, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any action that could escalate the situation.

IGAD stressed that the differences between the Federal Government and the South West State should be resolved through inclusive dialogue, using existing national mechanisms, rather than resorting to confrontation or hasty measures.

The organization also reaffirmed its support for peace, stability and unity in Somalia, stating its readiness to facilitate reconciliation and dialogue efforts to achieve a lasting solution.

IGAD’s statement comes at a time when all of Somalia’s partners are concerned about the tensions in the South West region.
