The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today signed the country’s new constitution, following its approval by both houses of the Somali parliament on March 4.
At the signing ceremony at the presidential palace, where the two houses were present, the president said that this step completes an important stage in which the parliament has concluded the review of the constitution.
“The Federal Parliament of Somalia has completed the review of the constitution, and from today onwards, we are focused on its implementation and ensuring that the Somali people enjoy the rights and obligations written in it,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
The president pointed out that the constitution is a social contract that can serve as the basis for efficient governance and political stability.
“This document is a social contract, and I hope it will lead Somalia to peace, stability and efficient and just governance,” he added.
The president’s signature marks the final step in the implementation of the constitution, although additional procedures are still awaited to implement its provisions.
Although the president signed the new constitution, some of the country’s regional governments and opposition politicians strongly opposed the constitutional amendments, seeing them as a move to extend President Hassan Sheikh’s rule.
