The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Cirro, has called on the Somaliland community to unite and stand together, at a time when many influential countries in the region strongly oppose Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
The President said that Somaliland has not harmed anyone, and that it is focused only on its own interests, but that hostile countries have emerged, and therefore it is necessary for the people to unite and defend Somaliland.
“There are many conflicts going on in Somaliland, we have not harmed anyone, we have not taken anything from anyone, so what is needed is for the people to maintain their unity and solidarity, to defend their nationhood and statehood,” said President Cirro.
He particularly thanked the scholars, saying that they guided the nation, and convinced the nation of people who he said were hiding behind religion and misinterpreting the recognition of Israel in society. “I thank the scholars, and I pray for them,” said President Irro.
The governments of Somalia, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Djibouti are currently at the forefront of the governments that are very concerned about the recognition of Somaliland, constantly campaigning in international forums for Israel to withdraw the recognition it gave to Hargeisa as soon as possible.
The Somali government sees the recognition of Somaliland as a threat to its territorial integrity and independence, and is working to pressure Israel to end relations with Somaliland, just as Ethiopia withdrew from the agreement it reached with Hargeisa in early 2024.
Other opposing governments also have strong ties with Somalia, believing that recognizing Somaliland runs counter to their interests in Somalia and the region, as most of them do not have good relations with Israel.
