The Israeli Foreign Ministry has announced that the Israeli government has officially granted diplomatic accreditation to the first Somaliland ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Omar Haaji Mohamud (Mohamed Hagi).
An official statement from the ministry said that the move follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Somaliland on December 26, 2025, and follows the agreements reached during the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Somaliland last month.
The ministry said that Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Hagi is currently an advisor to the President of Somaliland and was one of the officials who played an active role in implementing Israel-Somaliland relations in 2025.
Israel also announced that an ambassador to Somaliland will soon be appointed, which is described as another step to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two sides.
The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, has appointed Dr. Mohamed Hagi as the full and plenipotentiary Ambassador of Somaliland to Israel, following Israel’s full recognition of Somaliland on 26 December 2025.
The Ambassador shall have all the powers, powers, rights and duties of that office, in accordance with the Constitution of Somaliland, existing laws, and international diplomatic norms, according to the Spokesperson for the President of Somaliland.
This appointment comes at a time when relations between Somaliland and Israel are expected to enter a new phase, with reports indicating that the two sides are planning to expand cooperation in the areas of politics, trade, innovation, water management and regional security.
