The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation of the Northeastern Regional State of Somalia has officially announced the holding of the Local Council Elections, which will be led by the Somali Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
A press release from the Minister’s Office today stated that the ministry fully supports the implementation of these elections, based on Articles 104 and 105 of the Northeastern Regional State Constitution, which define the system, authority and procedure for local council elections.
The ministry also stated that it is responsible for organizing, supervising and ensuring that the elections are held in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia, particularly Article 47, and other laws of the country.
The Northeastern Administration said that it will not tolerate any disruption to its borders and responsibilities as an administration, and will take legal action against anyone who attempts to interfere in the elections or violate the state system.
The press release also stressed the need to maintain good neighborliness, harmony and stability between the communities living in the Northeast and neighboring administrations. The administration called on relevant institutions and the public to uphold the law, and to refrain from any action that undermines peace and stability.
Finally, the Northeast Ministry of Interior reiterated that maintaining peace, law and good neighborliness are top priorities, urging the Electoral Commission to carry out its duties in accordance with the constitution and laws of the country.
The Puntland Regional State Administration in Somalia, which has a disagreement with the Federal Government on elections and claims that the Sool and Sanaag regions are under its jurisdiction, is opposed to holding elections in those areas.
The Northeast Administration officially announced that elections will be held in its areas.
