The United Nations Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) and other international partners have expressed their regret that the ongoing talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Future Council have ended inconclusively.

UNTMIS, together with international partners, today met with senior representatives from both sides, urging them to continue efforts to reach a lasting political solution.

In a statement, UNTMIS said it welcomed the commitment of both parties to continue the talks, and that it was important that the talks proceed in good faith and with compromise.

The UN Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, noted that while there was no agreement on the points of contention, they were hopeful that Somalia’s political leaders would come together to reach an inclusive national agreement.

UNTMIS and international partners have finally called on the parties to prioritize the common interest of the country and continue the dialogue to find a lasting political solution.

The Somali Future Council has confirmed that its negotiations with the Federal Government have ended in failure. The main points of disagreement include constitutional amendments and early regional elections.

The Federal Government of Somalia has not yet commented on the failure of the talks.
